Viscose textile pulp from Hallein

Since January 2013, Schweighofer Fiber GmbH's pulp mill has been manufacturing viscose pulp for the production of textile fibers, which are known as viscose staple fibers. The base material for the textile fibers is a highly-pure viscose pulp, which is almost entirely made up of pure cellulose. The plants and processes in Hallein have been adapted for this purpose by means of a 60 million euro investment.

The company uses only spruce wood (long fiber) from sustainably-managed forests (PEFC certified) within the European Union. The wood is digested in a cooking process using magnesium bi-sulphite. The bleaching process that follows is environmentally friendly and totally chlorine free (TCF). This means that the cellulose produced in Hallein is also suitable for use in the food and hygiene industries. Viscose pulp manufactured from pine wood (long fiber) also has a performance-enhancing effect for the customer's manufacturing processes.

Alongside the conventional grade of viscose pulp, which is used in the production of textile fibers, and which is offered under the product name Performance 94-550, Schweighofer Fiber produces additionally more specialized cellulose products. These are characterized by an even higher proportion of alpha cellulose, along with increased viscosity. This highly-pure cellulose is offered under the name Performance 95-630 and is used in the production of nitro-cellulose, sponges, CMC or for food chemistry-related applications.
